Story Characters

For the last six years I've been writing (off and on) a sci-fi novel, referred to as The Story, The Adventures of Albert, or That One With The Guy And The Things. It started off as a joint project with Tom and Donovan (who you can see in this picture here, taken around the same time that we started), but then I just went off with it on my own, with Nick Mayer editing.
It now stands at about 100,000 words, 10 chapters and an average of four redrafts per chapter. Having not written anything for months, I'm now finishing off the Interactive Adventure as a run up to finish off the first proper part of The Story. And, as a run up to that, I've finally put together this page describing the main characters from The Story, at least one of whom also appears in the Interactive Adventure. I've cobbled together images of the characters from various sources, and I'm pretty pleased with the way some of them have come out.

Solanna3

Bio
Solanna3 is an AI. Her 'body' is a sleek ship with a highdrive and multimorphic fins that allow her to fly anywhere she wants - from deep in the ocean to deep space. She uses a Remote Drone Unit (RDU) to project an image of herself as a human. The '3' after her name denotes the fact that she has undergone two personality rewrites. She does not remember her experiences prior to the last rewrite, and is hence about three years old.

Image Notes
The face came from an image of Cammy (from Street Fighter), drawn by someone I can no longer track down. I extrapolated heavily, creating most of the hair, the cap, and all of the body. The eyes and hair were tinted purple and white-blonde, and the background comes from animewallpapers.com. Finally I added the cheesy but effective thick black outline.

Bronze Pierson

Bio
Bronze is a hero in the making. The official Administratium Wherego report had him become a 'Professional Smuggler/Pirate Captain' - with a heart of gold, of course. He is partnered with his ship, Goanther (see below), and recruits everyone else on this page to his crew. Although he is officially the captain, he is only just learning how to be a leader.

Image Notes
The image was originally one of 'Johnny Barracuda' from Danger Girl. I smoothed it out, and took out a heck of a lot of lines from the face to create the young, naive visage of Bronze. He looks suitably anxious about his position, but has the makings of a classic hero.

Fork

Bio
Fork is an enigma in wraparound shades. He has a high-tech gun and is a superb marksman - but avoids killing at all costs. He has a weird sense of humour and is rarely ever serious - yet he somehow avoids getting killed despite the multitude of dangerous situations he puts himself in. Doing well as a 'freelance do-gooder and all round nice guy', he didn't take much convincing to join Bronze's team. He's been partnered with Solanna3 for as long as she can remember.

Image Notes
This is from a 2000ad cover, showing a character called Sinister. It is unusual because Sinister doesn't usually have a cheesy grin, and he also doesn't usually wear wraparound shades. With a little smoothing and hair-tinting, he quickly became the spitting image of Fork.

Karey Kay

Bio
Karey Kay is a celebrated professional dance/composer, with billions of fans across the galaxy. Working in concert with a talented DJ or specialist AI, she dances to music while at the same time composing it through her movements. Incredibly athletic, she has ear-implants supplying her with constant mood-music, and neck-and-cranial modifications allowing her to headbutt like a trooper. She just wants to have fun.

Image Notes
This is in fact Shirley Manson from Garbage, who on occasion (and by co-incidence) sometimes looks just like I imagine Karey. Here she has the right hair and the right kind of attitude: I just needed to clean up the jpeg a little and add the smallest hint of a nose-stud.

Goanther Zokbar Kappa

Bio
Goanther is an extraordinarily advanced AI, partnered with Bronze as a direct result of the Wherego report. His 'body' is a ship designed only for space travel, with excellent facilities for a crew of six. Not even a year old, Goanther is still finding his feet; unlike Solanna, he finds interacting with humans difficult, and he does not have a Remote Drone Unit. He only takes on a human appearance in simspace. What he was doing for the first few months of his life remains a mystery.

Image Notes
The background shows the result of a neutrino scattering experiment at the Super Kamiokande detector. The character shown is in fact supposed to be a young George Lucas, taken from the cover art of the 'George Lucas in Love' DVD. The image needed a lot of expanding and treating, but did not need any real changes - he looks just like Goanther. Amazing!

Samuel Crowe

Bio
Samuel is an ambitious scientist, specialising in explosives. To protect himself, he allows others to take credit for his work, since he knows he is highly likely to be 'head-hunted' by anyone from the highest Barondom official to the lowest pirate scum. Keenly intelligent, he sticks fiercly to his own moral code. He brings some well-needed brains to the group.

Image Notes
Samuel was invented by Donovan Rees: with little description available, I wasn't sure what he should look like. Then I found this picture of Patrick McGoohan, and it just clicked. Something about his brow, his slight smirk like he knows exactly what's going on - just like I imagine Dr Crowe. I just had to tidy up the jpeg, and created the background in Photoshop.

Carmaen

Bio
Carmaen is heir to the highest position on the Magical side of the Barondom government. Trained in combat, stuffed with knowledge of science and Magic and with inherited psi skills, she rebelled from her preplanned life to wreak havoc across the galaxy. By the age of 21, she has five fully-developed and verifiable alternative identities, and between them she is wanted for various crimes across dozens of planets. She is in a totally different class to the other crew-memebers.

Image Notes
Tom Marrs came up with Carmaen, so again I wasn't quite sure what she would look like. This is probably the least accurate representation of a character here, but it gets close. It is in fact Sydney from Danger Girl, with the blue eyes turned brown and the hair tinted. The background is again from animewallpapers.com. (Note that Carmaen does not usually carry a bullwhip.)

Jeramey Vil

Bio
Vil is currently being held in stasis, serving out a 300 year sentence. Utterly selfish, but completely charming, no government knows quite what to do with him. To make a political point, he has systematically carried out every crime in the Barondom from the letters A through to W, his spree being cut off just short of Xenocide. Divisive and manipulative, the only reason he has any place in the gang is his vast experience in seemingly every avenue of life.

Image Notes
Another character created by Tom Marrs, but never written about - all we knew was that he was, essentially, evil! Jhonen Vasquez's 'Johnny the Homicidal Maniac', as drawn by some other comic artist (can't remember who), was the inspiration behind this drawing. I then gave him the bald head, and created the body and coloured it all in Photoshop. The background is a blue sky, which is lovely.
